The playfield replaced a large blacktop play area with an artificial turf field and running track, embellished on the north end with ceramic artwork honoring supporters by local artist Charles Bigger. This was a project of the Salmon Bay School PTA spearheaded by then Groundswell NW President Sam Star. Groundswell also supported a later Salmon Bay School PTA project to install a play area designed for children on the autism spectrum, south of the NW 67th Street pedestrian passage.
